Paludarium Project

The Experience

Raw build phase of the empty glass enclosure

Current Build Status

Currently, you are looking at an empty glass enclosure. A rainforest doesn't appear overnight; it requires a foundation. Before the immersive 24/7 stream can begin, we are in the raw build phase. Automation, climate control, and rigorous technical testing must be flawless before a single drop of water or leaf of moss is introduced.

Final Ecosystem Vision

Once the technical hardware is calibrated, the botanical architecture takes over. From aquatic mosses to towering epiphytes in the canopy, the flora will not be mere decoration. It will be planted months in advance to act as the living filtration and life-support system. The plants must root, grow, and stabilize the micro-climate completely before any fauna is introduced.

The Vertical Ecosystem

A thriving paludarium is divided into distinct micro-habitats, stacked vertically. Each layer will be inhabited by species uniquely adapted to its specific climate and geometry.

The Water Zone (Foundation):

The aquatic base is the engine of the biotope. It will house our biological cleanup crew, including Neocaridina shrimp and schooling nano-fish like the Mosquito Rasbora (Boraras brigittae). Together with aquatic plants, they ensure a clean, stable water cycle.

The Forest Floor (Ground):

Patrolling the mossy roots and damp leaf litter will be the Poison Dart Frog (Dendrobates auratus). We specifically focus on the striking blue and black morph. These terrestrial amphibians thrive in the high humidity of the lower levels, constantly hunting for micro-insects and utilizing the dense undergrowth for cover.

The Understory (Mid-Level):

As the day fades, the Clown Tree Frog (Dendropsophus leucophyllatus) takes over. With their distinctive patterns, these nocturnal amphibians utilize the broad leaves and damp branches just above the water surface as their primary hunting and resting grounds, adding a fascinating dynamic to the night-time observation.

The Canopy (Top):

Basking in the highest, brightest, and warmest areas of the enclosure will be the Neon Day Gecko (Phelsuma klemmeri). Known for their incredible agility and brilliant neon-blue and green colors, they navigate the smooth bamboo, branches, and vertical glass with ease, inhabiting the uppermost layer of our rainforest slice.

Welfare Over Content

Patience as the Foundation

You might wonder why we are currently showing an unfinished enclosure instead of immediately producing nature content. The answer is simple: Animal welfare is our absolute priority! A functioning ecosystem cannot be forced. We take months to calibrate the technology and test the microclimate before a single animal is introduced.

The Water Paradox

Experienced keepers know: Poison dart frogs and deep water zones are sometimes considered a risky combination, as these animals are considered as poor swimmers. We do not ignore this risk. However, instead of eliminating the water section, we have implemented several measures to make drowning nearly impossible for our frogs.

The 5-Point Safety Concept

We minimize the risk through targeted biological and architectural design:

  • Species: We will keep the morph D. auratus "El CopĂ©". This specific variant naturally copes comparatively well with water surfaces.
  • Population: A strict group of two males and only one female prevents territorial and sometimes fatal fights between females.
  • Depth: Paradoxically, deep water protects. If a frog is attacked, it can escape downwards and will not be pinned underwater by the aggressor.
  • Topography: Gently sloping shores and strategically placed hardscape guarantee a comfortable and safe exit from the water at all times.
  • Botany: Floating plants with large, buoyant rosettes (like Pistia stratiotes) form a dense, stable mat on the water surface that easily supports the weight of the animals.
