Current Build Status

Right now, you are looking at an empty glass enclosure. A rainforest does not appear overnight; it has to be built layer by layer. I am still in the raw build phase, testing the automation, climate control, and safety systems until their behavior is stable and understood. The 24/7 stream comes later.

Final Ecosystem Vision

Once the technical foundation is stable, the plants take over. From aquatic mosses to epiphytes in the canopy, they are part of the filtration and life-support system, not decoration. They will be planted months before any animals are introduced, giving roots, biological processes, and the microclimate time to settle.

The Vertical Ecosystem

The current design divides the paludarium into distinct micro-habitats, stacked vertically. Each planned species is matched to the climate, structure, and space of its zone; final suitability will be checked again before any animals enter.

The Water Zone (Foundation):

The aquatic base is the engine of the biotope. The current plan includes Neocaridina shrimp and schooling nano-fish such as the Mosquito Rasbora (Boraras brigittae). Together with aquatic plants, they can support the water cycle, but stable conditions still depend on careful setup and monitoring.

The Forest Floor (Ground):

For the mossy roots and damp leaf litter, the current plan focuses on the Poison Dart Frog (Dendrobates auratus), specifically the blue and black El Copé morph. The lower zone is being designed around its need for humidity, cover, feeding space, and safe access to the water's edge.

The Understory (Mid-Level):

The planned mid-level species is the nocturnal Clown Tree Frog (Dendropsophus leucophyllatus). Broad leaves and damp branches above the water are intended to provide the climbing, resting, and hunting structure it needs after dusk.

The Canopy (Top):

The upper zone is planned for the Neon Day Gecko (Phelsuma klemmeri). Its bright, warm canopy will provide bamboo, branches, and vertical surfaces for climbing, basking, and cover.

Welfare Over Content

Patience as the Foundation

You might wonder why I am showing an unfinished enclosure instead of nature content. The answer is simple: animal welfare comes before the schedule, and before content. A functioning ecosystem cannot be rushed. I will give the technology, plants, and microclimate the time they need before any animal is introduced.

The Water Paradox

Deep water and poison dart frogs require careful design because the animals are not strong swimmers. I am not treating that as a solved problem. The current design uses several safeguards to reduce risk, and the finished setup still has to prove itself before any frogs enter.

Five Layers of Risk Reduction

The current plan combines biological and architectural safeguards:

  • Species: The current plan uses the D. auratus "El Copé" morph. Its care requirements and suitability for this habitat will be checked again before stocking.
  • Population: A planned group of two males and one female is intended to reduce territorial conflict, especially between females.
  • Depth: The planned water depth is intended to leave room for escape rather than creating a shallow trap. This assumption still requires specialist validation.
  • Topography: Gently sloping shores and strategically placed hardscape provide several gradual, easy-to-reach exits.
  • Botany: Floating plants with broad, buoyant rosettes, such as Pistia stratiotes, can add resting points and surface structure.
